Working with Corian
Corian is a man-made material similar in many ways to plastic.
It is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to wear breathing protection (a good quality respirator) when working with Corian. Wearing good eye protection is also VERY IMPORTANT.
Minimizing heat build-up is critical—otherwise you will find that the cut that you just made will close up right behind your blade! Consider using a skip tooth blade and running your saw at 50 to 60 percent of its maximum speed.
Local sources of Corian include countertop installers, who may be very happy to have you take away their scrap pieces so they do not have to bother with them. Online sources include Etsy and eBay (be aware that prices vary greatly—especially based on color— and could range from $10 to $30 per square foot).
Many scrollsaw patterns can be cut out of Corian instead of wood. Most projects cut from Corian tend to be used for trivets and coasters.
Here is a pattern with hearts that I have used for years.
