Scroll Saws
Scroll saws vary widely in price and features. It is important to consider what you want from a scroll saw before making a purchase.
Do you want a saw whose table can tilt either to the left or the right when making angled cuts? Or would a saw with only a left tilting table be ok?
Do you want a saw whose blade feeds through a starter hole in fretwork projects from the top or from the bottom?
Checking out a few online reviews of different saws may be a good place to start. And coming to one of our club meetings and asking questions directly of people who own and use scroll saws would also be an excellent idea!
If possible, it is strongly recommended that you try out any scroll saw you are thinking about buying with a "hands on" demonstration.
Generally speaking, a good entry level scroll saw will cost between $100 and $300. A fine mid-range saw will be between $500 and $800, and higher-end saws will be $1000 and more (the retail price on some of the new Hegner models are in the $2000 range).
Remember, more money may mean more features, but beautiful scrollsaw projects are made on entry level saws every day....we know because many of our club members own entry level saws and have been happy with them for years!
Steve Good (a very well-known leader of the scrollsaw community) posted some excellent insights into buying a used saw on his blog (www.scrollshopworkshop.blogspot.com) on May 17, 2021. To see a copy of that post, click here
For your convenience, below is a short listing of some of the scroll saws you may wish to consider. You may also want to consider buying a used scroll saw from a garage sale or an online platform like eBay, OfferUp, etc. Always look closely at the condition of a used saw as any repairs will be your responsibility. There is a big difference between a saw with dust and a saw with rust!
Please be cautious and take steps to ensure that your personal data is secure when you go online. And also be cautious of your personal safety when meeting in person with someone who you have only interacted with online.
