Wood Suppliers

A big advantage to buying your wood stock from a local supplier is being able to actually see and touch what's available before selecting just the right piece of wood for your project. At the same time, you may find a limited variety of woods to choose from or be required to buy a full 6 or 8 foot long board (though some shops have "bargain bins" where they sell "cut-offs" or "left-overs" from other customers' special orders).

Online stores can often times provide access to a wider selection of wood (particularly exotic hardwoods) and the ability to buy shorter lengths of lumber (6 inch, 12 inch or 18 inch long boards instead of 6 or 8 feet).

LOCAL SUPPLIERS

San Marcos Hardwood Lumber Company - Click here

Extremely helpful and friendly staff.  Offers a variety of domestic hardwoods (3/4 inch thick and thicker, some 1/4 inch stock as well) and plywoods.  Also has a small selection of quality exotic woods (this may become your "go to" place to shop when you need a piece of purpleheart or yellowheart in a hurry to finish up a project).  Can cut down long boards and sheets of plywood to make it easier to fit in your car or truck.  The company owner (Don Widders) has been kind enough to make presentations to our club several times over the years.   Special note: San Marcos Hardwood will cut a foot or two from a long board of lumber and sell it to you, so long as the board that is left is at least 6 feet in length.

Tropical Exotic Hardwoods ("TEH") - Click here

TEH is well known for the beautiful large slabs they sell to local woodworkers to make into incredible tables and massive doors.  They also has plenty of 3/4 inch and 1 inch thick lumber for intarsia projects.  This shop has an amazing and extensive collection of exotic wood, largely from South American (cocobolo, bocate, kingwood, snakewood, granadillo (Mexican rosewood), Honduran mahogany, and much, much more).   If there's an exotic wood that you've never seen in person, you may well find it here!  Also has a variety of domestic hardwoods including some very nice birdseye, curly and quilted maple.  This shop is also one of the few local suppliers where I have been able to find holly.

J and W Redwood - Click here

Good source for Western Red Cedar ("WRC", used often in Judy Gale Roberts intarsia projects) and for Redwood.

Frost Hardwood - Click here

Great source for hardwoods, softwoods and plywood.  They have a "bargain bin" of cut-offs from custom jobs (including exotic hardwoods) and the cut-offs are reasonably priced.  The "bargain bin" may give you an opportunity to try working with a wood that you wouldn't otherwise be able to, because of scare availability or the cost of a full length board.   If you are interested, check back often as new cut-offs are frequently added to the "bargain bin".
